Western adventurers and archaeologists plundered our archaeological artifacts, which are cultural assets of our country, until 1923. While unexpected individuals turned a blind eye to this plunder, some of our officials resisted at the risk of their lives in the desolate corners of our country. This study, using archival sources, examines the surprising dynamics of the plunder of our unique Hittite-era artifacts from the Zincirli and Sakçagözü mounds in İslahiye (Gaziantep) by the Germans, and the extraordinary relationship with foreigners of Osman Hamdi Bey, the most authorized person responsible for protecting these artifacts at that time.
