Product Description
In this book, Hakkı Yırtıcı examines the capitalist relations that affect space, the types of relationships that develop between space and the processes that produce it, and how these transform space.
Since capitalist organization and capital, like everything else, view space as a tool to maximize their profitability, they disregard the uniqueness of the social, cultural, and geographical values that constitute space. As a result, space is only dealt with through a practice shaped within the specific conditions of the capitalist economy. Understanding the knowledge of space production that emerges in metropolitan settlements, an area where this transformation is very clearly observed, with a mindset and method that grasps mass culture, also means understanding today's consumer society.
The author does not only examine this problem within a theoretical framework; in an environment where the world is debated as turning into a large hypermarket, he analyzes two shopping centers in Istanbul belonging to two major hypermarket chains in Turkey, Carrefour and Real hypermarkets, and examines all traditional concepts of space one by one. As a result, he focuses on the existing reflections of the theoretical framework, thus succeeding in establishing a direct link between our daily lives and major forces.
