Product Description
It is not known whether Paul Cézanne painted as a child.
At school, he was more interested in literature, and his
essays were on poetry. The first paintings that have survived to
this day are those he made after his school life ended. If he had any
artistic inclinations, it is clear that his family certainly
did not support them.
His conversations with Emile Zola, his close friend since his
school years, were among the first factors that stimulated his imagination.
The Provence region, where he went on long exploratory walks with Zola, became the place the painter was attached to throughout his life.
In his later works, Cézanne repeatedly explored the themes of his childhood; the quarries where he walked with Zola, those bathing in the streams, and Mont Sainte-Victoire, the summit of the nearby low mountain range.
