Product Description

In his previous works, Orhan Türker took us to the Greek-majority districts of multicultural Ottoman Istanbul, such as Kurtuluş, Samatya, Adalar, and Galata, which have largely lost their traditional social and ethnic structure today but preserved it until the mid-20th century, revealing the radical changes that occurred in the recent past. Now it's time for Edirnekapı, another forgotten Byzantine district.

Although the Greek presence never surpassed the Turkish population after the first century following the Conquest, Edirnekapı remained a district where Turks and Greeks, or Muslims and Christians, lived side-by-side until the mid-20th century. Unfortunately, it eventually shared the same fate as other ancient Greek districts, and the Greek population dwindled and disappeared after the 1960s.

This secluded district of Ottoman Istanbul is now increasingly becoming a center of attraction with the Byzantine and Ottoman architectural structures it encompasses.

From Pili Adrianupoleos to Edirnekapı narrates the story of a forgotten Byzantine district.
