The Renaissance and the Ottoman World

The Renaissance and the Ottoman World brings together the latest research on the cultural, intellectual, and commercial interactions between Western Europe and the Middle East during the Renaissance period. This book, which investigates the elements of contact and exchange between the Christian West and the Muslim Eastern Mediterranean, considers the Ottoman Empire as an integral part of the geopolitical and cultural continuity in which the Renaissance evolved. In doing so, it aims to advance the discussion regarding the nature of the Renaissance by refining how we understand diverse artistic, intellectual, and political interactions in the pre-modern and early modern Mediterranean world today.

Topics discussed include commercial contacts, exchange of knowledge, use of goods, sources of architectural inspiration, musical interactions, and the use of Eastern Mediterranean sources in the West and European sources in the Ottoman Empire.

She is a professor of Islamic Art History in the Department of Art and Archaeology.
