The Silent House

In *Silent House*, Orhan Pamuk explores the hidden conflicts and violence inherent in the history of the Republic and modernization through the story of a disintegrating family. Thirty years after its initial publication, Orhan Pamuk has added chapter titles to this new edition and made the book more readable for new readers by eliminating some repetitions in the narrative.

Three grandchildren – one a historian, one a revolutionary, and one determined to become rich – visit their grandmother in her house in Cennethisar, a town near Istanbul. They stay for a week in this house, which their grandfather had built seventy years earlier when he arrived in the town as a political exile. During this time, as their grandmother's ninety-year history, laden with memories, slowly unfolds, the writing of a grand encyclopedia, which their grandfather believed would instantly bridge the gap between East and West, is recalled. In the house, silent observers bridge generations, while beyond the garden walls are the passionate actions of young people interested in the family. Orhan Pamuk's second novel, *Silent House*, was met with great excitement upon its publication, translated into many languages, and received numerous awards.
