Sustainable Urbanization

Today, ensuring urban sustainability has become very important in terms of increasing urban quality of life, creating liveable cities with clean air, water, and soil, enabling more efficient use of natural resources, and reducing energy costs. This book, prepared with the aim of contributing to transforming urban development and transformation activities into an opportunity to create sustainable cities and eliminating risks, consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the concepts of sustainability and sustainable development are examined.

In the second chapter, the definition of sustainable cities in world literature, the requirements for sustainable cities, and studies on sustainable urbanization in the world and in Turkey are discussed. In the third chapter, the topic of sustainable design is examined under the headings of economic, environmental, and social sustainability. In the fourth chapter, an evaluation model developed by the author to assess sustainable urbanization is introduced.

It is hoped that the book will increase the awareness of urban sustainability among a wide range of individuals, from relevant public officials who shape our cities through urban development and transformation activities, to contractors, to professionals such as engineers, architects, and urban planners, to academics, and most importantly, to our citizens who are the users of cities as demand holders.
