Sustainable Society and Built Environment

The environment in which humanity lives today affects a very wide area, creating the most critical and destructive problems of our world; most importantly, it is reaching dimensions that increasingly threaten human life, with dozens of flood disasters occurring every day as a result of climate change, the destruction of nature we have created, and countless similar devastations caused by unconscious production and development. The threats arising from this have led to the development of different policies by certain institutions and individuals over the last forty years, especially the discussion of preventive measures. After the 1980s, researchers and planners working on the environment and environmental problems developed strategies for the "sustainability" of society and the environment. The first book in the series initiated by Istanbul Bilgi University Publications on this subject, "Sustainable Society and Built Environment - A Spectrum of Strategies," written by İlhan Tekeli, a leading academician, and Anlı Ataöv, a young academician, examines different definitions of the concept of sustainability, how these definitions are transferred to planning practice, and proposes a method in this regard. Another important feature of the study is that it compiles various strategies applied worldwide for achieving sustainability and systematizes a spectrum of strategies based on the proposed method. The authors argue that the environmental awareness that has emerged worldwide today is open to diversity; they foresee that planners and designers have important duties in contributing to sustainability and that they should have a broad and inclusive vision for the change in people's lifestyles according to the requirements of environmental culture.
