Sustainable Development and Urbanization: From Theory to Practice

The United Nations (UN) has called for global action with the aim of creating a sustainable environment for future generations. At the UN General Assembly held in 2015, leaders from 193 countries united within the framework of 17 core goals and 169 targets to adopt the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined within this framework consist of titles such as eradicating poverty, combating hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice, and strong institutions, and partnerships for the goals.

In the process of adopting and implementing the SDGs, countries exhibit different approaches based on their economic capacities and development levels. While the management of this process in Turkey is carried out by central and local governments, academic circles also contribute to different sectors and scientific fields at a theoretical level. In this context, the question of the level of awareness and importance regarding the SDGs stands out as a subject that needs to be researched.
