Vernacular Architecture and Traditional Building Craftsmanship in Turkey

The phenomenon of folk architecture, which constitutes an important part of our tangible as well as our intangible cultural heritage, is one of the topics that have been largely neglected in the writing of Turkish cultural history.

The insufficient identification, compilation, and documentation of traditional master builders who gave life to folk architecture until a few generations ago has led to extremely great and irrecoverable losses, and the rich memory of folk architecture could not be recorded and archived.

Undoubtedly, folk architecture is one of the specific, difficult, and arduous topics in folklore studies. This is one of the important reasons for the quantitative inadequacy of researchers working on and dedicating effort to this subject, and for the significant delay of studies compared to other topics in folklore.

This book, a selection of field research, publication activities, and intellectual endeavors spanning over twenty years, focuses on folk architecture and traditional master craftsmanship and aims to fill a significant gap in the literature.
