Prof. Dr. Cemil Ata graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Forestry in 1969. He completed his doctorate program in 1975 and became an Associate Professor in 1980. He worked for more than 22 years at Black Sea Technical University, in the departments of Forestry Engineering and Landscape Architecture. He obtained his Professorship in 1988. In 1992, as the Dean of Bartın Forestry Faculty, he established the departments of Forestry Engineering and Landscape Architecture. In 1997, he began teaching in the Department of Landscape Architecture of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Yeditepe University, where he established the departments of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture under the Faculty of Architecture. He has held many academic and managerial positions at Yeditepe University, with over 22 years of experience. Between 1976 and 2000, he participated in many academic projects and worked abroad for some time, in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, France, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Portugal. In 1987, he attended lectures at Oxford University as a Visiting Professor. Prof. Dr. Ata has seven published textbooks, many articles, and reports. He has been the executive director of the Atatürk Arboretum Project since 2003 and he is still teaching at Yeditepe University, in the Faculty of Architecture.
