Cities and Inner Castles in Turkey

Walled citadels served as residences for rulers and armies for a thousand years, and as sacred centers that embodied power for the elite. The "citadel phenomenon," which is often overlooked in architectural history and usually overshadowed by palace and temple architecture, receives the attention it deserves with this book.
In "Cities and Citadels in Turkey," a product of the symposium organized by Koç University's Anatolian Civilizations Research Center (ANAMED) in 2009, leading experts on the subject take a close look at citadels built in Anatolia and Mesopotamia from the Iron Age to the 14th century.

Citadels, which served as protectors, representatives, and witnesses of cities in every era from the Urartians to the Anatolian Seljuks, and from the Assyrians to Byzantium, tell their own stories at the intersection of archaeology, architecture, art history, and history.

Scott Redford is the Nasser D. Khalili Professor of Islamic Art and Archaeology in the Department of History of Art and Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Nina Ergin is an associate professor in the Department of Archaeology and Art History at Koç University.
