Product Description
In his work *Style and Epoch* (1924), published a year after his first book, *Rhythm in Architecture* (1923), M. Yakovlevich Ginzburg elaborates his views on the history of architecture and how styles emerge and disappear. His fundamental view is this: since a style is an expression of the cultural and aesthetic values of its era, a "constructive" architecture, the style of modernity and the machine age, must emerge. Adopting art historian Heinrich Wölfflin's cyclical view of history, Ginzburg emphasizes that every style is constructive in its youth, organic when it matures, and decorative when it declines. To determine the general rules of architecture, he attempts to evaluate the aspects of styles that are bound to their epochs and those that transcend them.
