Product Description

In 'Transformation of the Valley,' Ayşen Eren not only provides an excellent example of interdisciplinary scientific work, but this book also illuminates ongoing discussions in sustainable development and renewable energy. The contribution of HPPs to the national economy is well-known. However, HPPs also have environmental and social costs. River valleys are being transformed into electricity generation areas. With an approach that synthesizes the multifaceted and multilayered perspectives provided by the social sciences, Eren examines this dilemma. As the product of an unusually in-depth study, this book offers a significant contribution to the field of environmental sciences.

In her book, Ayşen Eren discusses several dimensions of the destructive effects of capitalist development in Turkey. While analyzing the brutal ecological devastation caused by hydroelectric power plant capital in the İkizdere Valley, she also shows how it recklessly disrupted the lives of the local people. In this research, we witness how the capital's takeover of water dramatically transforms the locale and, along with it, local social relations. The author doesn't stop there; she scientifically demonstrates that the hydro-development project was implemented through the hand and support of the state. Furthermore, she connects the reader with the enthusiasm of the local resistances that developed throughout the valley and continued on several fronts, including legal battles. Thus, Ayşen Eren presents a richly detailed analysis that weaves together the historical, ecological, spatial, administrative, political, and social aspects of the neoliberalization of nature in the İkizdere Valley in recent times. With these qualities, the book is a very important contribution to ecological discussions in Turkey.

Among studies addressing environmental issues in Turkey, Ayşen Eren’s book is unique in its interdisciplinary approach. I found her discussion, especially regarding judicial processes, to be illuminating and important. Furthermore, her sensitivity to the material dimension of the river environment and hydroelectric infrastructure is noteworthy. The book is highly informative as it is based on comprehensive research that blends multi-sited participant observation with other methods such as the analysis of legal documents and processes, and it offers a comparative, broad perspective. With these qualities, it is strongly positioned within the field of political ecology and other international debates. For these reasons, I highly recommend the book to master’s and doctoral students.
