Product Description
The 1970s was a period when economic prosperity deteriorated in early capitalist Western countries and environmental problems became increasingly visible. In the face of this crisis, two solutions were proposed: "turning to lifestyles independent of the market," advocated by social movements, or balancing economic growth with development by utilizing nature within the market economy. The latter option was chosen, and it was argued that, in addition to economic growth, basic needs such as food, health, housing, and education should also come to the forefront in the development approach. However, despite this new understanding, the system's motto of "continuous growth" persisted behind the scenes. Although environmental protection and development are addressed together today, economic crises and ecological degradation continue.
The concept of the Green New Deal, which was opened for discussion after the 2007 global economic crisis, offers a solution that brings together economic, social, and ecological perspectives. Although it has not yet gained as widespread acceptance as 'sustainable development,' which emerged in the 1980s, European countries have begun to implement some elements of this approach in many areas, especially in energy. However, the obligations of countries and individuals regarding environmental protection are still being debated in the international public sphere.
At this point, while the work of international organizations is guiding, it is of great importance to address the historical development of environmental problems and the current critical stage with their intellectual dimensions. This book examines the environmental problem in all its aspects, revealing new possibilities for solving this seemingly intractable crisis.
